There is something oh-so-soothing about sea glass. The smooth, frosted looking glass that washes up in the waves is very unique. If you are looking for cool coastal wedding decor ideas, consider making these sea glass vases. No, you won’t have to hunt down bottles that have washed up from ship wrecks long ago! Instead, you will spray paint onto recycled glass bottles in order to create that soft sea glass look! Here are the steps.
Step 1: Collect The Bottles
For your sea glass vases, you will use recycled bottles. Clear glass liquor bottles and soda or wine bottles with a blue tint make great choices. Thoroughly was and remove the labels from your bottles. Soak them for twenty minutes in a sink full of hot, soapy water in order to complete this step without much scrubbing!
Collect a variety of shapes and sizes for an eclectic look. The paint you will use is slightly transparent. If you want to create a cohesive look in your wedding decor, stay away from dark glass so that you have some consistency. If you are okay with more of a mix and match, casual look, you could include dark green and blue glass.
Step 2: Spray Paint
Sadie of “Sadie Season Goods” recommends Krylon spray paint in “Sea Glass: Sea Foam”. Follow the directions on the paint that you choose so that you spray from far enough away. You don’t want drips and uneven coats on your finished product!
Step 3: Apply A Clear Coat
Wait until your colored paint has completely dried before you do this step. You might have to wait days! Once it is totally dry, spray on a clear coating of paint so that your sea glass colors do not chip. This will protect your vase, but will not make it dishwasher safe!
Step 4: Decorate
You could also decorate them with netting, twine, sea shells, words, or photographs. I like the simplicity of leaving them plain, but that is up to you! These vases would look great as center pieces for your reception tables. You could fill them with beach booty, like palm fronds, and then attach a tag with the table number!
It can be fun to prepare for your big day by crafting fun D.I.Y. projects like these vases. Artistic and beautiful touches add so much personality to your celebration! You could use these coastal decorations at an actual seaside event, or even for a beach themed wedding without the beach! Are you excited to make a sea glass vase? Let me know in the comments below!
