When it comes to shoots, the most important thing people have in mind is location, location, location. What is often overlooked is how the people in front of the camera are feeling. Unless they’re professionals, most of the time, they will feel nervous and that nervousness could definitely ruin what could have been the perfect shot. The solution? Pick a perfect location that contains elements the couple can feel relaxed in. Make it so they can be calm or talk about the things they can relate to in the surroundings. And what could be more relaxing than beautiful Malibu?
Malibu is known for its fabulous beaches, so you would think an engagement shoot there during the summer would be the way to go, right? But the outdoors-y couple, Rachel and David, had something else in mind. They chose to go to the Malibu Creek State Park, which David frequents on hiking trips. They also wanted a winter feel, with hints of spring and summer. Somewhat unusual, but it all worked out beautifully. The tall grass and soft winter sunlight gave their photos a rustic and romantic feel. They also didn’t pass up the chance to take gorgeous photos along the shoreline because, really, who could resist the pull of the sea? They were so at ease with each other in an environment they loved that it easy for the photographer to capture moments the couple will cherish forever.

What did you want to portray in your engagement shoot?
I wanted to portray this couple in all the elements that they love. They both enjoy being outside and as a couple go hiking and rock climbing together which brings their relationship even closer. As a photographer I wanted to share that love in the most natural way possible, how they are together.
Why did you choose the location?
Rachael, the bride, actually chose the locations. We discussed a few times how she wanted something outside, rustic with also a beachside feel. Her fiancé visits the Malibu Creek State Park quite often for hiking and they both knew it would be a perfect spot! I completely agreed with them — how could you go wrong in Malibu?
What inspired your outfits for the engagement session?
Rachael and David picked out their outfits – they were wanting a winter feel with little hints of spring and summer on the way. The whole concept of rustic/woods/beach inspired their choices for outfits.
Do the photos give a hint on what will happen on their wedding day? How so?
Yes! Their wedding will be held at the Rose Garden Estates in Tehachapi which is going to be so beautiful and is such a gorgeous outside venue. These two were so much fun to photograph so I can imagine their wedding is going to be just as magical.
How did you tell the couple to feel at ease with all the posed shootings?
Most of the little posing I had Rachael and David do definitely led into just natural interactions between them, which came across beautifully in the camera. Little whispers into each other’s ears and lots of laughing definitely helped too.
